Jan. 21, 1936 - Nov. 6, 2013

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Una M. Cox, 77, of Vancouver, passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 6, 2013, in Salem, Ore.

She was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Elkhart, Ind., to F. Marian and R. Marie (Teel) Cox.

Una was a 1954 graduate of Elkhart Central High School. In 1957, she graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in South Bend, Ind. After working a few years at Memorial Hospital and Elkhart General Hospital, Una left the Midwest, moving to Seattle. While working at a hospital there she continued her education at the University of Washington, Seattle, obtaining a B.A. in social welfare. Her career as a nurse also included several hospitals in Oregon. She retired five years ago.

She is survived by her brothers, Everett Cox of Hull, Ga., and Russell (Charlene) Cox of Salem; and sisters Sharon (David) Haas of Elkhart and Shirley Brown of Goshen, Ind. There are a number of nieces and nephews living throughout the U.S.

She was preceded in death by her parents, F. Marian Cox and R. Marie Cox; stepmother Geraldine Cox; infant sister Mirriam Olive; sister Margaret McCreary and her husband, G.H. McCreary; brother Richard Cox and his wife, Joan Cox; brother-in-law James R. Brown; and sister-in-law Bette Cox.

Una had a special love for her family; she was separated by miles, but not by devotion. She also had a special cat, Rascal, who allowed Una to share his home in Vancouver. Her lifetime friend in Elkhart, Janice Dolph and her family, had been an important part of her life as well.

As per Una’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Burial will be in Noffsinger Cemetery in Elkhart County.

Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
