GOSHEN — Virgil L. Snyder Sr., 94, of Goshen, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Maples at Waterford Crossing, Goshen.
He was born March 13, 1919, in Goshen to Clifford C. and Virda I. (Shipe) Snyder.
He married Viola E. (Hammer) Snyder on Dec. 18, 1943. She died July 11, 2010.
Surviving are sons Virgil L. (Merry Dee) Snyder of Goshen and Jeffrey A. (Mimi) Snyder of Springfield, Mo.; daughter Nancy E. (Dr. Michael) Gasko of South Bend; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Virgil was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force on Sept. 8, 1941, and was stationed at Fort Worth, Texas. On Nov. 30, 1944, he was transferred to U.S. Army Infantry and left New York on the troop ship Santa Rosa. He landed in LaHarve, France on Dec. 7, 1944, and went into the 3rd Army under George Patton and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He rode tanks into Germany until the war was over in Europe. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in Indiana on Dec. 15, 1945.
Virgil was owner/operator of Snyder’s Men’s Shop, Goshen. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Goshen, Maplecrest Country Club, Scottish Rite, Mason and Rotary Club.
A celebration of life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, where a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery.
