Aleene A. Thompson

Oct. 30, 1920 - July 4, 2013

ELKHART — Aleene A. Thompson, 92, of Elkhart, went to her eternal home to worship her heavenly Father forever on Thursday, July 4, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Douglas, on Dec. 29, 1998.

Formerly a resident of Indianapolis, she and Doug were married in 1946 and celebrated 52 years of marriage before he passed away. She moved to Elkhart in 2010 to be closer to her two daughters.

She was born the second of three daughters to Alva and Emma Craig and is survived by her younger sister, Carolyn Bernard of Houston; and a niece, M. Christine Koerner of Indianapolis.

She is survived by her children, C. Lynn (Lee) Hawk of Elkhart, B. Kay (Richard) Bontrager-Stout of Elkhart, Gary D. (Nancy) Thompson of Utah, David O. (Gail) Thompson of Kalamazoo, Mich., Neil C. (Susan) Thompson of Fishers and Alan L. (Tammy) Thompson of Indianapolis. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was always active in gardening and with children helping, vegetables were canned for winter and flowers were brought inside to grace the home. Whatever work she did, she infused daily chores with her excellent aesthetic sense, bringing a sense of beauty into the achievement. Her green thumb produced spectacular violets and indoor lilies. When her children became older, she worked many years in Indianapolis as a real estate agent for several brokers until her retirement at age 77.

She was active in several bridge clubs and played in duplicate bridge clubs locally. She was a lively bidder, competitive and always ready for the next hand to be dealt. Upon transitioning to live in Elkhart in 2010, she continued to play bridge with her daughters and friends.

She modeled her belief that family was important by her excellent meals and a clean home for children to grow in. She will be remembered as a very loving mother.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral and Cremation Center, Elkhart, where services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, with Pastor Harold Knight officiating.

A committal service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Center for Hospice Care, 22579 Old U.S. 20 East, Elkhart, IN 46516 or the American Lung Association, 115 W. Washington St. Suite 1180-South, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
