ELKHART — Alfred L. Schmalenberger, 86, of Elkhart, passed away May 12, 2013, at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Valley View.

He was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Evansville to the late Harold and Olive Jane (Martin) Schmalenberger. He married Betty Mann on June 22, 1966, in Bristol.

He retired from Conrail Railroad after 40 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Elkhart; daughters Debbie (Ralph) Crume of Middlebury and Amy (Terry) Replogle of Vandallia, Mich.; stepchildren Linda Bowen of Athens, Tenn., and Jim (Polly) Hatler of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, with two hours of calling prior to the service, at Waterman Westbrook Clouse Funeral Home. Pastor Lawrence Smith of Calvary United Methodist Church will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.

He attended Calvary United Methodist Church. He was an avid gardener and loved animals.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Salvation Army of Elkhart or Calvary United Methodist Church.
