NAPPANEE — Val Paul Trinkley, 53, died Thursday, May 9, 2013.
Val biked 30 miles from Nappanee to South Bend the day before he died. He loved riding out on the country roads in the sun, where the fields kept him company. Great music, live concerts, a good game of Frisbee, parties, hiking, and dancing—Val delighted in every moment of life. He was patient, encouraging, fun-loving and generous, always lifting up others and always offering a drink to those who visited.
After graduating from Notre Dame in 1982 (go Irish!), he married Ruth Tezich a year later. They would have celebrated their 30th anniversary this year on July 2. Val wanted eight kids, but he compromised and had three instead—Rachel, Layne and Neil—who were proud to have him as a father.
He was the youngest son of Jane and Zane Trinkley of South Bend. They survive, along with his brothers, Kim and Jan (Priscilla) and sister Joy (Tom Heffernan); mother-in-law JoAnne Tezich; brothers-in-law George (Debbie), Greg (Deb) and Bob; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Val was a dedicated and hard worker; he and his team labored through tough times and shared great moments. He began his career in metallurgical engineering at NIPSCO, later working at NiSource, Energy USA, Conoco Phillips and most recently as a vice president at EDF.
Val took joy in beautiful places and was devoted to and beloved by all those who knew him. We will miss our co-worker, boss, friend, confidant, uncle, brother, son, father and husband.
