ELKHART — Janis L. Huff, 93, of Elkhart, died at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Greenleaf Health Campus.

Janis was born Oct. 31, 1919, to Ray and Helen (Shank) Larimer in Topeka.

She married John B. Huff on April 18, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1978.

She is survived by her children, Jackie (Bill) Clindaniel of Elkhart, John (Karen) Huff of Muncie and Jeff (Nancy) Huff and Jodi (Greg) Ferro, both of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith Ann Huff in 1943, and two sisters, Geneva I. Miller and Joan Ewald.

Janis was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and South Bend Business College.

She worked as a secretary at Bendix before World War II, where she met her husband. She was a homemaker and also assisted in the family business, Huff’s Pharmacy at Parkmor Plaza, which they operated in Elkhart from 1959 to 1979 but originally opened in South Bend in 1949. After the passing of her husband, she worked at Carson Pirie Scott for many years.

She was a 50-year member of Psi Iota Xi sorority, where she was a charter member and past president of Zeta Zeta Chapter. Her sorority was an integral part of her life.

Janis loved music and was in band, orchestra, choir and musical productions in high school. She played the piano and organ and loved to sing. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and volunteering. She had a special place in her heart for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church prior to leaving Elkhart to live with her daughter, Jodi, in Chicago in 1994. She returned to the area and lived in Niles, Mich., for several years before moving back to Elkhart in 2009.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the funeral home.

A private family burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
