John G. Hill Sr., 87 Elkhart

April 30, 1925 - March 27, 2013

ELKHART — John G. Hill Sr., 87, of Elkhart, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.

He was born April 30, 1925, in Port Arthur, Texas, to John A. and Inia B. (Pruitt) Hill. On March 20, 1996, in Mission, Texas, he married Eleanor (Cripe) Bell.

She survives along with two children, John G. Jr. (Dayne) Hill of Orange, Texas, and Jan E. (Robert) Booker of Westerville, Ohio; two stepchildren, Cynthia (Douglas) Grant of Merchantville, N.J., and Dr. Thomas D.O. (Janice) Losure of Belvidere, Ill.; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by twin sisters Virginia Stockton and Kathleen Youngblood.

As a high school student John was a certified automobile mechanic. John served in the U.S. Army 445th Ordinance, Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company during World War II in France and Germany. After the war he taught automotive theory at West Point until he decided to go to Baylor University, Waco, Texas, where he graduated with a BBA in 1950.

During his business career he owned several businesses including Hill Piper Aircraft Flight School, where he trained pilots, sold airplanes and flew charter service. He also owned Thrifty Car Rental Co. and a picture-framing business.

John was very active in the Masonic Lodge and Shrine in Galveston, Texas, where he served as potentate. He also served on the board of directors for Shrine Burs Institute for six years. John was a member of Elkhart Elks Lodge 425, Trinity United Methodist Church and a member of the Seekers Sunday School class at the church.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the funeral home. Pastor Ron Bowman will preside. Burial will follow in Yellow Creek Cemetery, Goshen, where full military rites will be rendered.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriner’s Hospital Burn Unit.
