Oct. 25, 1926 - March 22, 2013

MISHAWAKA — Samuel D. Garns, 86, passed Friday morning, March 22, 2013.

He was born Oct. 25, 1926.

He was a lifelong resident of South Bend and Mishawaka.

Sam graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1941 and worked as a foreman of maintenance at Ball Band/Uniroyal from 1944 to 1985, retiring at age 59.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Shirley Ann (Carson); five children, Stephanie (Michael) Person of Elkhart, Dana Barton, Larry Davey, Linda Davey and Mark Switalski; and five grandchidren, Eric (Leslie) Person, Jason (Karen Biele), Tania (Danny) Payne, Sabrina (Jason) Morris and Jennifer Davey. He took great joy in his seven great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Hudson, Holland, Gavin, Fiona, Haley and Brittany. Also surviving are his cousins, John Voorheis and Marilyn Williams.

His children, whether biological or step, were loved equally. He lovingly called kids and pets alike “Punky,” and was known to some of the grandchildren as “Papa Pipe.”

Sam was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as a young adult and loved playing softball for the Uniroyal team. He would enjoy skipping church on an occasional Sunday to take his daughter fishing, and was an enthusiastic golfer and bowler for Club 15.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get to see his beloved Chicago Cubs win a World Series in his lifetime.

Thanks to Dr. Bilal Ansari, Dr. Tran and all the staff for their expertise, compassion and care. We cannot express enough our gratitude for Center for Hospice. They helped make it possible for our dad to remain at home with his wife and family.

A private prayer service for the family will be prior to his burial.

Contributions can be made in his memory to Center for Hospice Care and any area animal shelters.
