March 27, 1921 - March 19, 2013

ELKHART — Walter Dean Cornell, 91, of Elkhart, passed away at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Eastlake Terrace Senior Living Center in Elkhart.

Born March 27, 1921, in Denver, Ind., he was the son of the late Jay Denzil and Margaret Elizabeth Grimes Cornell.

On Sept. 30, 1945, he was married to Delores Levon Taylor. She preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 2001. They celebrated 56 years of marriage together.

Walter graduated from Peru High School. He was an Aircraft Radio Operator during World War II and again during the Korean War, which inspired his interest in becoming a licensed amateur radio operator. He retired from the Bendix Missile Plant in Mishawaka. He then retired from Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman, Mich. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.

Survivors include one son, Terry Ray Cornell and wife Linda Ruth of Mishawaka; one brother, Ronald Gene Wibel and wife, Julie Ann of Mokena, Ill.; one daughter-in-law, Gretchen Louise Cornell of New Kent, Va.; one sister-in-law, Edna Aletha Cornell of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Lee Cornell, and one brother, Gordon Leroy Cornell.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by Miami County Military Rites Unit will follow in Westlawn Cemetery, Denver. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
