ELKHART — David S. Axsom Jr., 67, of Elkhart, died at 12:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

David was born July 26, 1945, in Elkhart to David Sylvester Sr. and Jewel (Mahar) Axsom. He married Carolyn Bradshaw on March 26, 1977.

She survives along with his mother, Jewel; his sons, David (Tracy) Axsom III and Jarid (Mary) Axsom, both of Elkhart; his daughter, Rebecca (Ray) Hibbs of Edwardsburg, Mich.; stepsons Glenn (Tammy) Bingaman, Troy (Andrea) Bingaman and Ryan (Tami) Bingaman, all of Elkhart; brothers Tom Axsom of Georgia and Pete Axsom of Elkhart; sister Susie Sawyer of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Phyllis Brown; and his dog, Nikita.

His father, David Sr.; a grandson, Alston Bingaman; and a sister, Wilmella Jo, preceded him in death.

David was a member of California Road Missionary Church.

He worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 28 1/2 years as train master in Elkhart and Cleveland and senior train master in Burns Harbor. He was passionate about trains. Before working on the railroad, he drove a truck for Franger Gas. He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing golf, horseshoes, pool, darts and cards, especially Texas Hold ‘em. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling and watching NASCAR.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the funeral home. Pastor Bud Walterhouse will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Rice Cemetery.
