DOWAGIAC, Mich. — Mary Lou Shroyer, 82, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Forest Glen Assisted Living in Dowagiac, where she had been living the last three years.

She was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Chicago to Henry and Elfreda Schwartz Kempton.

She moved to the Decatur area when she was 3 and was raised by her grandparents, Oswald and Otillie (Fietz-Witkowski) Schwartz.

She was a graduate of Dowagiac Union Schools and Western Normal School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard.

She is survived by her three sons, Jon (Terra) Shroyer of Decatur, Joel (Leonda) Shroyer of Decatur and Dan (Mary) Shroyer of Middlebury, Ind. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou was an elementary school librarian at Decatur and taught at country schools before that. She enjoyed gardening, reading and bird watching.

Mary Lou was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Decatur.

A private family memorial service will be at a later date.
