WAKARUSA — Longtime Elkhart resident Edna Emelia Davis, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 18, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa. She was 96-years-young.
Edna was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Alberta, Canada, to the late Ole and Marie (Holman) Anderson.
She was one of seven sisters and four brothers growing up on a dairy farm in Minnesota, where she developed her cooking and baking skills while helping to cook for her large family.
At age 22, Edna came to visit friends in Elkhart and fell in love and married the man of her dreams, Derwood W. Davis. They were married Sept. 2, 1939, in Bagley, Minn. Derwood passed away on May 8, 1979.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Connie O. Forte, and husband, Michael, of Elkhart; two loving grandchildren, Ian Forte and his wife, Michelle, of Osceola, and Sara Forte of Elkhart; five precious great-grandchildren, Hannah, Blake, Jade, Journey and Kierre; brothers Carl, Herman and Milo Anderson, all of Bagley; and sisters Evelyn Waggoner and Alvina Norley, both of Bagley, and Bernice Linde of Oregon.
Sisters Myrtle Torkelson, Anna Smeltzer and Elise Krigelski and brother Ingvald Anderson preceded Edna in death.
Edna worked for 41 years in retail sales, including at JC Penney’s, Newman’s and Style Shop.
Edna was an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church and contributed to its annual bake sale, making many loaves of the Norwegian rye bread for which the event has become known.
Edna was a member of the YWCA and the Married Women’s Club. She was also named YWCA Senior Volunteer of the Year for her service to the YWCA.
Edna loved to fish and enjoyed spending many wonderful summers at the family cabin she and Derwood built on Long Lake in northern Minnesota. Edna was a fabulous cook and made quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Please join with her family as they gather to celebrate a life well lived with visitation beginning a half an hour before the 11 a.m. memorial service Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Augustana Lutheran Church, 1133 Kilbourn St., Elkhart. Pastor Steven J. Reshan will officiate.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart.
The family prefers that memorials in her name be given to the church.
