OSWEGO -- Clell Russell Matthews, 83, of Oswego, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in Warsaw.
Russell was born on Nov. 18, 1925, in Addison, Ky., the son of Zetta Sarver Matthews and Clell Matthews. Russell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte Matthews.
A veteran of World War II, Russell served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force. Russell attended Purdue University.
In 1967, Russell joined Big Boy Products in Warsaw and retired as president of the company. Russell worked for Lions Club International and served as district governor and council chairman. Russell also was a member of the Elks 802 in Warsaw.
In addition to his wife, Charlotte, Russell is survived by his children, Maurita Matthews Dettmer (Dennis) of Hazelton, Pa., David Clell Matthews (Ellen Morley) of Indianapolis, Diane Matthews Warford (Bob) of Stilwell, Kan.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Reba Reed and Anna Schulz; and brothers Edgar Matthews and James Matthews. Russell was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Joseph Matthews and Leonard Matthews.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Clell Russell Matthews will take place at 1 p.m. Friday Oct. 9, 2009, at the Oswego Community Center, 3065 East Rader Road, Oswego.
