ELKHART -- Thelma L. Reed, 101, of Elkhart, died at 5 p.m. Monday (Jan. 26, 2009) in her home.
She was born Nov. 4, 1907, in New Paris to John E. and Edna M. (Johnson) Detwiler. On May 25, 1929, she married Irvin Helmuth in Elkhart. They were divorced. On Jan. 31, 1953, she married Paul F. Reed. He died in 1971.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy C. Shaffer and Gloria J. Lipp, both of Elkhart; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Wilson of Mishawaka; one stepsister, Gwen Van Holsbeke of Mishawaka; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Paul E. Lipp; one brother, Joseph Detwiler; one half-brother, John Detwiler; three half-sisters, Marge Alman, Josephine Noffsinger and Mary Kohler; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jim Fookes will officiate. Burial will take place in Adamsville Cemetery.
Mrs. Reed was employed at Miles Laboratories from 1947 until her retirement in 1970.
