NOTRE DAME — Notre Dame running back George Atkinson III has declared for the NFL Draft.
According to 247Sports, the Irish junior signed paperwork Tuesday, Jan. 7, to make his intentions official.
“I guess it’s like anything else when you feel you’re ready for something and the time is proper for you,” Atkinson’s father, George Jr, told 247Sports. “If you have an opportunity why not try to seize it?”
Atkinson entered the 2013 campaign projected as Notre Dame’s top tailback, but he never truly nailed down the position. By the end of the season, Atkinson’s carries plummeted in favor of rising freshman Tarean Folston and junior Cam McDaniel.
Atkinson leaves Notre Dame with 3,144 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons. He wrapped up the 2013 season second on the team with 93 carries, 555 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He was suspended from the Dec. 28 Pinstripe Bowl after violating team rules.
He had requested an evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board in December alongside teammates Stephon Tuitt and Troy Niklas. Atkinson told 247Sports that he received a late-round grade in his evaluation.
His announcement follows Sunday’s news that Tuitt had also decided to declare for the draft.
