Elkhart County sees little damage from overnight storms

While other areas of the state saw wind and hail damage from storms Sunday night, Elkhart County escaped relatively unscathed.

While other areas of Indiana saw wind and hail damage from storms Sunday night, Elkhart County apparently escaped largely unscathed.

The Elkhart County 911 Center reported receiving only one call overnight for storm-related damage for a tree limb in the roadway near S.R. 15 and U.S. 6.

The National Weather Service said as of 6:45 a.m., one report from the center of the county showed about 0.62 inches of rainfall in the overnight hours.

According to a power outage maps, one NIPSCO customer was without power in Middlebury as of 7 a.m. Monday, May 12.

A representative for Indiana Michigan Power said that about 120 of the company's customers were without power at some point Sunday night, but only 18 remained in the dark as of 8 a.m. Monday. Power was expected to be restored to all customers by early Monday afternoon.

The Associated Press reported about 10,000 power outages in Porter and Lake counties early Monday morning and the Gary/Chicago International Airport reported wind gusts of up to 78 mph.

An unconfirmed tornado was reported in a rural area near Rensselaer.
