Weather and emergency shuts down elements of Elkhart County

Weather and state of emergency cancelling classes, meetings, activities

ELKHART - Elkhart County's declaration of a state of emergency has once again impacted the operation of businesses, schools and local government.

The weather conditions have caused several cancellations and closings throughout the county.

  • Elkhart City offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 28. As a result, the Aurora Capital and special meeting of the Redevelopment Commission have been cancelled.
  • Oaklawn's outpatient services will be closed for all locations on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Patients with appointments scheduled for Tuesday should call (574) 533-1234 to reschedule.
  • Elkhart General Hospital's outpatient services are closed Monday. Edwardsburg Family Medicine, Middlebury Family Practice, Osceola Clinic and Bittersweet Medical Associates are also closed. Elkhart General Hospital will remain open. EGH patients scheduled for services or appointments not listed as closed should call 294-2621 prior to the appointment to confirm.
  • IU Health Goshen's outpatient offices are closed Monday and Tuesday. IU Health Goshen Hospital will remain open.
  • Outpatient services at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and Saint Joseph Physician Network offices closed Monday at noon and will remain closed Tuesday. Inpatient and emergency services remain open.
  • All OSMC offices will close at noon Monday.
  • Oaklawn's outpatient services will be closed Tuesday. To reschedule an appointment, call 533-1234.
  • Goshen's trash removal service will not run Tuesday. Service will resume Wednesday with a one-day delay, as with a holiday week.
  • Borden Waste-Away will also be closed Tuesday. Borden serves some residents in both Elkhart City and Elkhart County.
  • Interurban Trolley and ADA Access paratransit services will run as scheduled until 6 p.m. Monday but will then cease operations until Wednesday. The last Interurban Trolley run from the Elkhart transfer center will leave at 5 p.m. Normal services and schedules will resume Wednesday morning.
  • A presentation by Indiana Public Access Counselor Luke Britt at the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce has been rescheduled from Tuesday to Wednesday. The event will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The Elkhart County Election Board's Monday night meeting on vote centers has been postponed to an undetermined date.
  • Goshen College has cancelled classes from noon Monday through Tuesday. The college will make a determination on Wednesday's classes by 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Jodi Beyeler, interim director of communications and marketing.
  • St. Mary's College has cancelled "An Evening with Diane Wiest" and the related media event. The college will also close at noon Monday through Tuesday.
  • Meals on Wheels programs are closed Monday.
  • All area Martin's Super Market stores will close at 7 p.m. Monday and reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
  • The Goshen Parks Department has cancelled all activities for Monday.
  • University Park Mall closed at 1 p.m. Monday. "The mall will reopen for business when conditions are deemed safe," said Beth George, UP Mall spokesperson.
  • The Humane Society of Elkhart County will be closed on Tuesday. A skeleton crew will be taking care of the animals at the Humane Society and staff will monitor the hotline for messages about injured animals or animals in imminent danger.
  • Four Winds Casino in Dowagiac, Mich., and Hartford, Mich., will be closed at 2 p.m. Monday and reopen at noon Tuesday, Jan. 28. Four Winds New Buffalo will remain open.
  • Bob Evans, 2915 Brittany Court, Elkhart, closed at 10 a.m. Monday and plans to reopen Tuesday.
  • Eastlake Athletic Club locations that are not 24-hours closed on Monday. The 24-hour locations are open but unstaffed.
  • Whole Foods Market in Mishawaka closed at 6 p.m. Monday and plans to re-open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Big League Barbers in Elkhart is closed Tuesday.
  • All Penguin Points in Elkhart closed at 6 p.m. Monday.
  • The Lowe's Home Improvement store in Goshen closed at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
  • McCarthy's on The Riverwalk is closed Tuesday, Jan. 28.
  • Beacon medical Group practices in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties are closed Tuesday, Jan. 28, except the MedPoint-24 located at 6913 N. Main St., Granger. Elkart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital in South Bend are both open.
