Penn grad Alex Brinker goes to brink in Big East tennis semis

Splitting time at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, ex-Kingsman wins marathon semifinal, finishes spring 16-9 overall and helps Musketeers close at 19-6.

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y. — Sophomore Alex Brinker helped Xavier University place second in the Big East women's championship this past weekend at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Playing No. 2 singles, the Penn High School graduate and former Indiana state champion rallied for a critical marathon win in the semifinals on Saturday, April 27, that helped the Musketeers beat Marquette 4-3. Brinker topped the Golden Eagles' Erin Gebes 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 in a 3 ½-hour match.

In the championship the next day, DePaul (22-3, 4-0) topped Xavier 4-0.

The Musketeers finished the season 19-6 overall, 4-2 in the Big East. Splitting time at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, Brinker closed the spring at 16-9.
