UPDATE: Goshen High School students have come out on top in their first round of competition. The concert group placed first out of 18 schools this morning in the preliminary round of the percussion scholastic concert open.

Months of practicing paid off for Goshen High School's percussion group as they compete today in the first part of the 2014 Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

Last month the school placed first in concert and third in marching at the Indiana Percussion Association's state finals in Indianapolis.

"We've got a great group of kids this year," said Derrick Shannon, percussion director for the school.

Last year Goshen High placed fifth in the Percussion A Class Finals. This marks the second year the school has competed in the marching group category and the first year students will be competing in the marching and concert categories.

That meant learning two shows for the competition.

"In the past Goshen strictly had concert groups," Shannon said. "The kids have definitely done a great job with learning two shows."

The competition starts today and will conclude Saturday, April 12.
