Crossroads League tabs Bethel's Newell as week's best pitcher

    Goshen High School graduate Natalie Newell leads all NAIA hurlers with 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings.

    MISHAWAKA — For the third time during the 2014 softball season, Bethel College junior pitcher Natalie Newell has been named the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week.

    The Goshen High School graduate and two-time Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year has been steady and consistent while compiling a 10-1 record this season and leading BC to a 13-9 overall record.

    This week, Newell hit the mound four times and gave up only two runs (one earned) in 28 total innings. She struck out 47 and allowed just 11 hits.

    Newell's earned run average for the week was 0.25, lowering her season ERA to 0.42, which is third best nationally among NAIA pitchers. She also ranks in the national top 10 in seven categories, including No. 1 in strikeouts per nine innings.
