Bethany Christian School Forensics League places in two tournaments

The students placed 10th at the Indiana High School Forensics state debate tournament Saturday.

GOSHEN — The Bethany Christian School Forensics League has had a busy two weeks at competitions around the state.

Several Bethany Christian students earned high honors at the Indiana High School Forensics state debate tournament in Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 1.

In student congress, Lena Yeakey, junior, qualified for the final round of competition, placing 11th. Hannah Yeakey, freshman, advanced to the semifinal round of competition.

Sophomore Peter Shirk advanced the octafinal round of the Lincoln-Douglas debate, placing him about the top 16 entrants in the state in that event.

The team placed 10th out of 23 Indiana teams in the competition.

A week earlier on Saturday, Jan. 25, the Bethany league competed at the Northwest Indiana National Forensics League (NFL) District Debate Tournament.

Elijah Lora, sophomore, placed eighth in the Lincoln-Douglas debate. Shirk earned his third NFL degree in Excellence for his endeavors.

The team earned the fifth-place trophy at the tournament.

The team will compete again at the John Oliver Speech Invitational in Plymouth on Feb. 15.

 Concord's Peyton Kime, shown in a match May 27, shot a 36 Tuesday, June 3, on the front nine at Bent Oak Golf Club and led the Minutemen to a season-best team score of 158 and wins against Fairfield and Westview.
