Elkhart Central student Mallory Hill and Penn student Jessica Nelson were both awarded National Achievement Scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

According to the organization, Achievement Scholarships are given to outstanding black American high school seniors.

Both Hill and Nelson will receive $2,500 for college.

They are two of only 15 winners in Indiana.

Frank Serge, principal at Central, said Hill is a great student who works hard and is well-rounded. She also gets along well with others and "displays a high degree of character on a daily basis," he said.

A representative of Penn was not immediately able to comment.
