You want potholes? Try the Bristol Street-Nappanee Street curve.

They're plentiful where Bristol Street transitions into Nappanee Street in northwest Elkhart. These are probably the worst in the area, if you ask me and I have video to show it.

Worst potholes in Elkhart?

I'd have to say S.R. 19, right where it curves in northwest Elkhart, transitioning from Bristol Street to Nappanee Street. The westbound/southbound lanes are the worst. This is the area I'm talking about:

You best go slow so you can maneuver around the worst holes. And be careful changing lanes — the narrow strip between lanes is one long skinny divot in sections.

  • Scroll down to see the video I took of the section.

S.R. 19 at the curve, maintained by the Indiana Department of Transportation, is no stranger to potholes. When I toured around the city looking for the worst chuckholes two years ago, the section stood out as the worst as well. Look here. Fortunately, S.R. 19 south of Beardsley Avenue has since gotten a face lift, so the roughest patch is limited to the section north of that.

Johnson Street north of Bristol Street in Elkhart had stood out earlier in the winter as bad in my travels. But the holes have since been filled.

With spring yet to, well, spring, I suspect we have yet to see the worst of it. Careful driving and keep your eyes on the road.
