Douglas Carpenter: everything you need to know for the 2014 primary election

Douglas Carpenter, 52, a Democrat of South Bend, is unemployed and cares for his elderly mother. He entered the race, in part, to promote a more liberal turn within the Democratic Party. He cites his deep roots and connections in South Bend and St. Joseph County. He describes himself as pro-choice and fiscally conservative and favors a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

This is the first time Carpenter has run for public office.
