ELKHART — Want to learn more about the candidates up for election on May 6?
You're in luck. Four candidate gatherings open to the public are scheduled between now and Election Day in Elkhart County.
Among the contested races in Elkhart County are those for the District 48 seat in the Indiana House, the Elkhart Superior Court 3 judgeship, the District 1 seat on the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners and the Elkhart County auditor and recorder spots. Also on the ballot will be the hopefuls for the 2nd District U.S. House post and, among southern Elkhart County voters, the District 22 seat in the Indiana House.
Here's a rundown of coming election-related gatherings:
NAACP: The Elkhart County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People hosts a forum on Tuesday, April 29, starting at 7 p.m. It's free and open to the public and will be held at St. James AME Church at 122 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Elkhart. Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. House and state and Elkhart County posts have been invited.
Americans for Prosperity: The Indiana branch of Americans for Prosperity will host a candidate forum for the three Republican hopefuls vying for the District 48 seat in the Indiana House, Doug Miller, Adam Bujalski and Jesse Bohannon. It's free and open to the public and will be Wednesday, April 30, at Christiana Creek Country Club, 116 W. Bristol St., Elkhart. Doors open at 6 p.m. while the forum is set to begin at 7 p.m.
AFP is a conservative group that promotes limited government and low taxes. The key topics at the forum, according to an AFP rep, will be "advancing workplace freedom, protecting Hoosier taxpayers and promoting freedom in education."
Young Republicans: The Elkhart County Young Republicans is hosting a candidate forum on Thursday, May 1, at First Baptist Church, 53953 C.R. 17, just east of Elkhart. It's free and open to the public.
A meet-and-greet session goes from 6 to 6:45 p.m. while the forum is set to go from 7 to 8:45 p.m. The invited candidates, all of the Republicans, are the hopefuls for the District 48 Indiana House seat, Elkhart County commissioner, Elkhart County auditor, Elkhart County recorder and Elkhart Superior Court 3 judgeship.
Kiwanis: The Kiwanis Club of Elkhart is hosting a spaghetti fundraiser that also serves as candidate meet-and-greet session on Monday, May 5, at the Knights of Columbus hall, 112 E. Lexington Ave., Elkhart. Cost is $7 and advance tickets can be purchsed by contacting Mike Nicolini at 296-3713.
Serving times are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on May 5.
Candidates for state and county office have been invited.
