Highway department employee challenges Lucchese for county commissioner seat
ELKHART — A political newcomer is challenging incumbent Frank Lucchese for his seat on the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners.
First-time candidate Rick Easton has filed for the post, and Lucchese is seeking re-election to represent District 1, which covers Concord Township and part of Jefferson Township. Both candidates are Republican.
Easton has never run for office before, but said his bid for county commissioner has been eight years in the making. He works for the Elkhart County Highway Department as an engineering technician and inspector for county projects. He said he is interested in job stability and creation and improving the county’s infrastructure, like roads and bridges.
“But most of all, I stand for accountability,” Easton said, adding that he wants to see county funding and resources used wisely to benefit taxpayers.
Lucchese is seeking his third term as a county commissioner. He is a co-owner at Lucchese’s Italian Restaurant and serves on the board of directors for the Elkhart Boys and Girls Club. He said the county’s budget is the top issue local leaders will have to tackle over the next four years.
“I enjoy serving with the two other commissioners that I work with,” he said. “I enjoy serving our community and trying to make Elkhart County a better place to live.”
The deadline for candidates to file at the Elkhart County Clerk’s Office is noon Friday, Feb. 7.
