The Elkhart Republican Party has a busy few weeks ahead. There are four caucuses scheduled and another two possibly on the way. The goal will be to fill the five positions that are vacant on various township boards.

There are several ballot vacancies and replacement positions available. Those who are chosen to fill the replacement positions will serve from June 30 to December 31 of 2014. They can also be placed on the ballot (voted on in November) for the same position next year. Those who are chosen for the ballot vacancies will be voted on by the public in November elections and will serve in 2015.

Candidates for the positions must live in the township lines to be considered. Responsibilities will include working along with township trustees, approving budgets and making decisions for the township. Things like the township firefighters are financed through the trustee board.

Kim Ingle retired from the position of Nappanee Clerk Treasurer earlier this month, leaving a replacement position available. Ingle will serve until June 30 when her replacement will assume office. A caucus to fill her role will be held June 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce.

The Baugo Township Board also has two available positions, one replacement and one as a ballot vacancy. Donna Graves’ position will be filled due to her moving out of the township line.

There is an additional ballot vacancy. Margaret Kuehne of Osceola died on June 9, leaving in her place a ballot position open. The caucus date is not set but will be before the June 30 deadline, when all caucuses must be completed.

Cleveland Township will also have a ballot vacancy for November’s elections. The caucus will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. June 17 at Office of Cleveland Township Trustee.

If not enough applicants come forward, Mary Nisly will have to appoint the roles. She strongly encourages interested parties to contact her.

Those who are interested in submitting their name for consideration have until 72 hours before each caucus. Interested candidates should contact Mary Nisly, Chariwoman of the Republican Party Committee for Elkhart, with a written declaration of interest to her address at 27658 Foxmoore Ct. Goshen 46526. Candidates must also stop by the County Clerk’s office at the courthouse to fill out the necessary paperwork. Mary can also be contacted via email with questions mary@elkhartgop.com
