Rep. Walorski to make weekly GOP address, focusing on veterans issues
U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski will deliver the weekly Republican radio address on Saturday, March 29, focusing on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Reducing the VA backlog and holding those within the Department of Veteran Affairs accountable is one of the House’s top priorities,” Walorski said in a statement Friday. “Our nation’s veterans and their families have made incredible sacrifices and we must keep the promises we made to them."
A claims backlog has left veterans waiting for months, at times, to get benefits, according to a release from U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican from Ohio. He picked Walorski, a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, to make the address.
“The people who have let our veterans down should be held accountable, and with this weekly address, we’re putting the issue front and center," Boehner said in a statement.
It will be the second time Walorski has given the national GOP address. In the April 13, 2013, address, the Republican lawmaker from the Jimtown area focused on the federal budget and spending.
Walorski is co-sponsor of House Resolution 4031, which allows for removal of top VA officials for performance-related issues.
According to a statement on the measure on the veterans affairs committee website, lack of accountability among top VA officials exacerbates other problems. Top officials "who presided over negligence and mismanagement are more likely to have received a bonus or glowing performance review than any sort of punishment," it said.
Walorski kept busy this week on other veterans issues as well.
The veterans affairs committee on Wednesday reviewed legislation Walorski sponsors to "correct serious cyber-security weaknesses" in the VA, her office said in a statement. She testified on the measure.
On Friday, she testified to the committee on behalf of another measure, House Resolution 2974, that allows victims of military sexual trauma to tap into VA benefits to cover travel costs related to treatment for such incidents.
