KENNEBUNK, Maine (AP) — Tom’s of Maine is gearing up to award more than $500,000 to nonprofits for this year’s “50 States for Good” initiative.

Last year, the Kennebunk-based natural personal care products company picked 15 winners. This year, there will be a winner from each of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

An independent panel will identify the finalists in December.

This year, the program kicks off with a social media-powered effort to help kids in Detroit. The public can choose what improvements they’d like to bring to Knudsen Park in a recovering area just off 8 Mile Boulevard in the Michigan city.
