GOP files complaint against Schauer's running mate for not creating a campaign committee

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan secretary of state’s office is investigating whether Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer’s running mate illegally failed to form a campaign committee.

The state Republican Party filed the complaint against Lisa Brown in July. It says Brown was required to establish a candidate committee and file an organizing statement within weeks of her candidacy being announced in April.

Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak said Thursday the failure “reflects poorly” on Schauer’s campaign. In 2009, Schauer’s state Senate campaign committee agreed to pay a $6,000 fine and to send the state $202,000 in excess contributions his committee gave to the Senate Democratic Fund.

Schauer spokeswoman Cathy Bacile Cunningham says the campaign “strongly” disagrees with the “frivolous and meritless” complaint but will work with the state on a conciliation agreement.
