VASSAR, Mich. (AP) — The head of the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw is calling for compassion following a proposal to house child immigrants from Central America in a small Michigan community.

The Rev. Joseph R. Cistone visited El Salvador in February with Catholic Relief Services and says he saw children in need of food and shelter. He says the U.S. government must come up with new immigration policies as thousands of children traveling alone from Central America are crossing into the U.S.

Cistone tells The Saginaw News (http://bit.ly/1qcjWj0 ) that “Our response should be one of love and compassion.”

The bishop’s comments come as Grosse Pointe Park-based Wolverine Human Services says it wants to enter into a contract allowing its facility in Vassar to house children who fled violence in Central America.

Once a faded reflection of American cinematic grandeur, the 85-year-old movie palace at has been the focus of a four-year, labor-intensive effort to return the theater to business well before the new year. Restoration work has been under way by a crew of more than 50 workers since April 2013, and architect Richard Mitchell and others involved said the project actually appears to be ahead of schedule.
