HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Leaders of a program that encourages environmentally sound practices at marinas have scheduled a workshop to provide information and encourage more operators to take part.

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is sponsored by the Michigan Boating Industries Association, the state Department of Environmental Quality and the Michigan Sea Grant College Program.

Participants pledge to reduce or eliminate releases of harmful substances and phase out practices that can damage aquatic environments. More than 40 marinas have been certified under the program, which began in 2005.

Certification requires completing a 10-step process that includes training, a self-evaluation and a site visit.

The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday at MacRay Harbor in Macomb County’s Harrison Township.
