WARREN, Mich. (AP) — Mayor Jim Fouts wants owners of newly-opened stores in Warren to understand the city’s rules about selling fireworks.

Fouts’ office says he will visit shops Thursday to discuss the regulations and ride with police Friday to monitor city streets for violations on the July 4 holiday.

A task force of police officers, property maintenance inspectors, firefighters and park employees will patrol neighborhoods Friday. Undercover officers also will be on the lookout for illegal fireworks use.

Fouts has been outspoken about the use of illegal fireworks in Warren, just north of Detroit, and the dangers they pose to property and people.

State lawmakers legalized louder, more powerful fireworks in Michigan in late 2011. Local governments can regulate fireworks use during nighttime hours on holidays and the day before and after.
