HAZEL PARK, Mich. (AP) — Thoroughbred horse racing is returning to suburban Detroit.

The Oakland Press of Pontiac and The Detroit News report that Hazel Park Raceway is being updated with new racing surfaces, new railings, rehabilitated barns and other improved facilities.

Horses began moving into the stalls and exercise areas on June 16 and they will begin racing on Friday and Saturday nights starting this week. Sixteen weeks of events run through mid-October.

George Kutlenios, president of the Michigan Horsemen’s Protective and Benevolent Association, worked with Hazel Park Raceway and two other area tracks in 2010 on the effort. About 400 horses are expected to be stabled at Hazel Park, which was a site for thoroughbred racing until 1984.
