NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Central Indiana authorities say a man who jumped into the rain-swollen White River to rescue a woman and her child likely saved them from drowning.

Noblesville Fire Division Chief Rick Russell says the woman was playing Saturday afternoon along the river with her two children when her son fell into the water and was swept away.

The woman jumped in after him, but both were in trouble.

Russell says bystander David Norton jumped into the river and pulled the woman and the boy to dry land. He says that if the Cicero man had not acted the pair may have drowned.

Russell says the woman’s daughter jumped in the river to help her mother but grabbed onto a tree until police and fire personnel brought all four individuals to safety.
