GARY, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana Department of Education has announced it will assign a staff member to Gary schools to help implement federal programs and serve as a liaison.

State education officials told The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/1ra21Kq ) the move will improve collaboration with Gary while working to improve a school district that has been designated “high risk.” Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz said she believes the Education Department staff member can help improve Gary schools.

The state has graded 13 of the city’s 16 public school D or F. Late last school year, the Gary school board approved closing five of those schools.

School officials have said the 7,800-student Gary district faces a number of serious challenges, including 80 percent of its student body receiving free or reduced-cost lunches.
