One-quarter of the 20 best-paid public employees in Indiana are college football and basketball coaches, according to the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

In fact, four of those coaches are in the top five best-paid. In first place, Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean earned more than $2.9 million in 2013, while his Purdue University counterpart Matt Painter earned just more than $2 million that year for second place. The only female coach on the list, Purdue University women’s basketball coach Sharon Versyp, comes in 17th with a salary of $581,611.

Versyp is one of only three women on the Lafayette Journal and Courier’s top 20 list, which includes all public, state, county and municipal workers in Indiana.

Six doctors from county hospitals also made the list, as well as Columbus Regional Hospital CEO James Bickel.

Indiana University president Michael McRobbie’s salary was $853,189 in 2013, placing him eighth on the list.

Seven executives from Citizens Energy Group, a utility services company classified a nonprofit public trust, rounded out the top 20 list.

The Lafayette Courier & Journal lists the salaries and responsibilities of each top-earning public employee on its website.
