BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — A new transit center in downtown Bloomington is expected to open next month.

Final slabs of concrete around the edges of the building that will serve as base for city buses are being poured next week.

The first floor of the 10,000-square-foot building will be the transit hub. The second floor will house the emergency dispatch center.

Bloomington Transit General Manager Lew May tells The Herald Times (http://bit.ly/1jJQuxY ) the new center was needed because of an increased number of riders and larger buses. The new building allows for additional growth and is expected to serve the city for at least 40 years.

Bus ridership averaged between 500,000 and 700,000 a year in 1987 when the current hub was built. Now, May says ridership is about 3.5 million a year.
