GARY, Ind. (AP) — More than 200 law enforcement agents have volunteered to look for evidence in the shooting death of a Gary police officer.
Lake County Sheriff’s Police Cmdr. Guy Mikulich tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1pZV1z2 ) that volunteers from local, state and federal agencies showed up Wednesday to search the neighborhood where Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield was shot and killed early Sunday.
Mikulich says the search is centering on a two- to three-block radius near where Westerfield was found dead. Crews with chain saws worked just before noon to remove brush from an alley.
A person of interest in the case was taken into custody Sunday afternoon and remained in custody at the Lake County Jail on Wednesday.
The funeral for Westerfield will be held Monday at the Genesis Convention Center in downtown Gary.
