Gary boy, 13, fatally injured by vehicle that fled scene; 2nd boy also injured, sought help

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old Gary boy has died after a car struck him and another boy before fleeing the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office says Malik Herron was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma at a hospital.

Gary police say the two boys were walking about 8 p.m. Saturday when a vehicle left the roadway and struck them. The Post-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1iJgjaC ) the other boy was able to go home and tell his parents, who alerted police. The other boy was treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police were searching for a vehicle with damage to its front passenger side.
