Oil spill in Lake Michigan caused by BP malfunction

    Crews are attempting to contain and clean up an oil spill on Lake Michigan discovered Monday afternoon, March 24, after a malfunction at a BP oil refinery in Whiting.

    The malfunction involved a processing disruption and oil leak into the cooling water system. Then the oil was discharged into a cove leading to Lake Michigan, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.

    Officials from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were on scene with the cleanup crews Tuesday morning, March 25.

    The amount of oil that spilled is still unknown.
