GOSHEN — A Millersburg woman was killed after being hit by a car east of Goshen city limits Friday morning, Aug. 29.
Around 5:35 a.m., Jennifer Myers, 24, was traveling west on her moped on C.R. 38 when she was struck from behind by a car and thrown from the mo-ped, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
The accident happened in the 14000 block of C.R. 38 west of C.R. 35.
An officer and an off-duty firefighter arrived on the scene shortly after the crash and attempted life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful, according to the release.
Myers was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries. A helmet was found at the scene but so far it’s unclear if she was wearing it.
The driver of the car was identified as James D. R. Fugate, 29, of Wawaka, Ind. He was arrested at the scene on an unrelated warrant for criminal conversion and was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail.
Police say the Fugate didn’t see the moped and couldn’t stop in time before hitting Myers. Speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to eyewitness accounts and preliminary evidence.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. So far, no charges in relation to the crash have been requested.
