MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury man was arrested Thursday, Aug. 21, on four felony charges related to sexual assault.
Tyler N. McIntire-Cogemi, 19, faces two counts of child molesting, one as a class B felony because it occurred prior to July 1, 2014, and one as a level 3 felony because it occurred after July 1. He also faces two level 6 felonies — one count of performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor and one count of dissemination of matter harmful to minors.
The investigation began July 22 when Middlebury police and an Elkhart County sheriff’s deputy were called to McIntire-Congemi’s home because he said he wanted to harm himself, according to court documents filed in the case by Elkhart County sheriff’s detectives.
When officers were checking on him, McIntire-Congemi said he wanted to hurt himself because of guilt he felt over things he had done. He was admitted to Elkhart General Hospital.
At the hospital, McIntire-Congemi told staff he had performed sexual acts on three male relatives who were minors, according to court documents.
Investigators conducted an investigation and corroborated what McIntire-Congemi said at the hospital.
In an interview with detectives Aug. 21, McIntire-Congemi waived his Miranda rights and admitted he had performed oral sex on the victims several times since he was 8 years old.
He also admitted to performing other sex acts in front of one of the victims on at least two occasions and showing pornography on his cell phone, police wrote in the court documents.
McIntire-Congemi was booked at the Elkhart County Jail, where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon.
His bond was set at $100,000.
He is scheduled to appear for an initial hearing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in Elkhart Superior Court 3.
