Driver escapes unharmed as Himco trash truck catches fire on the north side of Elkhart

The Elkhart Fire Department is working on determining the cause of the blaze.

ELKHART — A Himco garbage truck caught fire in an industrial park on the city’s north side Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 27.

Doug Nichols, the driver of the truck, said he was pulling up to a trash container in a parking lot when he saw a fire behind the truck’s cab.

He jumped out of the truck and tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but the cab was quickly engulfed. He was not injured.

Firefighters with the Elkhart Fire Department were called to the scene at 3403 C.R. 6 E. just before 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, an emergency dispatcher with the Elkhart Communications Center confirmed.

Fire investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fire Wednesday afternoon.
