Elkhart 2-year-old hospitalized with 'suspicious injuries' taken into protective custody

An Elkhart child hospitalized over the weekend with “suspicious injuries” has been taken into protective custody, police say. He’s gone from a “critical” to “stable” condition.

An Elkhart child hospitalized with “suspicious injuries” has been taken into protective custody.

The 2-year-old boy was taken by medics first to Elkhart General Hospital, then to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis on Sunday, Aug. 24, according to an Elkhart Police Department news release. The child remains hospitalized but has been taken off a ventilator, is responsive and has been upgraded to stable condition.

Police say their investigation into the incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made in the case as of Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 26.
