Bomb unit called to Elkhart City Hall Friday afternoon; police believe it was a gift

The Elkhart city hall was evacuated Friday afternoon after a suspicious package was reported.

The bomb squad unit of the Elkhart Police Department was deployed to the Elkhart City Hall Friday afternoon, Aug. 22.

There was a suspicious package reported to the 911 Call Center at about 1:30 p.m. People within the building, located at 229 S. Second St., were evacuated from the lower level outside the permit center.

As of 3 p.m., city employees headed back into the building and the bomb unit, formally called the Elkhart Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, was packing up.

The package is believed to have been a gift, according to Assistant Police Chief Laura Koch.
