Elkhart Central High School on lockdown as police respond to emergency situation

Students at Elkhart Central High School were placed on lockdown while police responded to a suicidal subject nearby. The lockdown was lifted around 3:15 p.m.

Elkhart Central High School  was on lockdown Thursday afternoon as police responded to an emergency situation nearby.

The lockdown was lifted around 3:15 p.m.

A school staffer confirmed that students were being held at the school until Elkhart police gave them the all-clear.

Police blocked traffic in the area of Richmond Street and Waterfall Drive near the school.

A dispatcher from the Elkhart City Communications Center confirmed that the roads were closed as police handled a situation involving a suicidal subject in the area.

Elementary school students in the area who ride the bus home may also be delayed in getting home, according to a tweet from Elkhart Community Schools.

Elkhart Central students were held about 35 minutes late, the school corporation tweeted.
