ELKHART — A 23-year-old Elkhart man was arrested Friday, Aug. 15, on suspicion of molesting a female relative.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Elkhart Superior Court 6, Dereck Dooley sexually abused a female relative from the time the girl was 6 years old until she was 15 years old.
A forensic interviewer from the Elkhart County Child and Family Advocacy Center interviewed the victim, now 16, in August 2013 after the victim reported the abuse to her mother.
She told the interviewer that Dooley had begun kissing her and touching her private areas over her clothing when she was about 6 years old.
The contact escalated over the years and included one instance of sexual intercourse at another relative’s home about a year before the interview, the victim said.
Police also interviewed a witness who described seeing Dooley touching the victim on “private” areas of her body, according to the affidavit.
Formal charges of sexual misconduct with a minor, a class B felony, and child molesting, a class C felony, were filed against Dooley on Aug. 4, and a warrant for his arrest was issued the same day, according to court records.
As of Monday afternoon, Dooley was still held at the Elkhart County Jail. His bond has been set at $60,000.
