A 2-year-old boy was placed in a medically-induced coma and his mother arrested after a one-vehicle crash Friday night.

The boy’s mother was driving south on Locust Road between Prairie Avenue and Ireland Road around 8:20 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, when the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree, according to a report from the South Bend Tribune.

The boy was not properly restrained and suffered a closed head injury. His 6-year-old sister received cuts to her face.

The mother, 31, was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent and was cited for driving without a license, the Tribune reports.

The boy was still in pediatric intensive care as of Saturday morning.

South Bend police are waiting on toxicology tests to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
