Three children sent to hospital after car accident near Mary Feeser Elementary School

The victims were passengers of an SUV that was rear-ended by a car Thursday afternoon, Aug. 14, near Mary Feeser Elementary School.

ELKHART — Three children ages 4, 9 and 12 were sent to Elkhart General Hospital Thursday evening, Aug. 14, after a car accident near Mary Feeser Elementary School.

Around 6:15 p.m., Stephanie Legus, 29, was stopped in an SUV on C.R. 4, east of Audra Drive, waiting to turn north into the school’s private drive, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Madeline Rhinesmith, 17, was traveling east on C.R. 4 in a car when she got distracted and rear-ended Legus’ vehicle, the release said.

Three children, who were passengers in Legus’ vehicle, were injured in the accident.

The 4-year old and 12-year-old were taken to Elkhart General Hospital with head pain. The 9-year-old was sent to the hospital with upper-leg pain.

No enforcement action was taken at the scene.
